CRICKET WORLD CUP DIARY FROM OUR MAN IN BARBADOS - 7 March

Jason MolinsWednesday 7th March 2007

Clarence Hiles reports from the Caribbean...

Whether minnows or 'lambs to the slaughter' as one Caribbean journalist has described the non test nation's participation in this competition, there has been plenty of fodder for both sides of the argument with Bermuda dismissed for only 45 by England, Ireland running the South Africans pretty close, and Bangladesh downing the Kiwis. Of course these are only 'warm up' games but they are very important for both the strongest and weakest as they show form, commitment and ability, and in a few weeks time this will separate the sheep from the goats!

Dwayne Leverock is certainly no minnow and at 20 stones plus the Ivan McCombe 'look-a-like' makes former Ireland captain Jason Molins look like a gazelle! There's no substitute for class and if Petersen and Co. poked a little fun in his direction, he had the last laugh didn't he?
Despite humiliating Bermuda England won't win this World Cup but big Dwayne will do much to show cricketers of all shapes and sizes that there is a life outside treadmills, vitamin tablets, healthy diets and fitness regimes.
Roll on big man, and is it true that Roy Torrens has now offered his services as a fielding sub should the need arise?
