I'm sure I speak for all players and officials around the Union when I express my sadness and regret at the sudden passing of Alan Waugh. Alan was not only a fine umpire but a decent bloke and Ulster cricket will be the lesser for his loss. :(

Sympathies to the family circle from all at Armagh CC.

Sam - the net runs rates are on the NCU website. Millpark still have one game to play so run rates may not come into it. However, if they fail to win their final game against Cregagh on Sunday, or if it is scrubbed because of the weather, they have a comfortable advantage over Cooke Collegians and should be promoted.

Somebody call for Andy K. !

Its was the height of the delivery that caused the confusion !

How can it be above the batsman's waist on the full (in which case it is a no-ball), when the ball hit the top of the stumps and removing the bails in the process ?

OUT ! bowled !!

I believe my original decision or (non-decision), was indeed the correct one at that time !!

RE: Vic bowled off the full toss.

It isn't the striker's end umpire who calls the no ball for height.

Vic

I will stand to be corrected but as square leg umpire you don't actually call a full toss no ball but you can advise the other standing umpire of it's height. I believe it is a no ball if it passes waist height in the batsmans normal standing position. I think technically it can be a no ball and hit the stumps but again I'll stand to be corrected

Harry Henderson
We have just learned of the sad passing of Harry Henderson. Harry was a great stalwart of North-West cricket and through umpiring he made a big contribution to the game throughout Ireland. He was a highly-rated international umpire and a popular official with both players and spectators. He donned many roles in umpiring and gave sterling service in its administration. He was a friendly person who always had a warm welcome when greeting fellow cricketers.
Deepest sympathy is extended to his family

RE Wides...

Vic et al. one definite aid would be the painting of the "wide lines" which are ever present at the top level of cricket within the crease to aid umpires (75cm from outside lines).
From talking to umpires and standing myself in youth games its a real help and one which would be welcomed by all.
PS. Anything missing the line of leg if not passing through the batsman=wide

Was that the feisty clash of local rival Victoria and Portadown Vic?

Maybe that was a case of two wrongs making a right??

Andy,
From your responce, I take it then that the answer to my query regards the calling of a wide ball, is purely at the discretion of the umpire.

Although I have another little irksome problem that has caused me some difficultly in sleeping lately ?

During a match earlier this season, I was umpiring at square-leg, our Skipper was batting and was bowled by a full -toss, the ball skimming the top of the stumps and removing the bails.

Off he had to go, but later on I was confronted by some of our 'wiser' non-playing supporters and told I should have called 'no-ball', indeed the Captain himself later queried by judgement and wondered why I had not called 'no-ball'!

My point is...the assumption was the ball was to high on the full ! But how could it have been, when the ball actually hit the wicket ?

i would just like to echo alfies comment and although i wasnt there i would like to thank neil and lurgan for their efforts in getting the game played on saturday.
Lurgan are a proud club and there was never any doubt that they would want a win to finish the season.

Vic - I had the pleasure of standing with a colleague from the North-West recently and, before the match, he had expressed some concerns about the interpretation of the "wide" in NCU senior cricket. At the end of the game he was a convert to our practice in that bowlers accept the decision. In other jurisdictions I understand that problems with bowlers arise regarding the calling of "wides" such as "how wide was it?", "was it wider than the one you called 3 overs ago?" etc.
I note the concerns of Mr Williamson about the Lurgan game. Had he a wee "spot bet" on the result!? As someone who was unfortunate to be both Waringstown & Lurgan on Saturday rather than enjoying the sun in "Bullfast" (sic) I would describe the conditions at Pollock Park that I saw at 3:30, despite the best efforts of the guys on the ground, were "unsuitable" verging on the "dangerous".
